Manchester City Council (MCC), the authority for the third largest UK city, partnered with Ameresco to complete significant upgrades and optimisations to its energy infrastructure. These modernisations deliver long term carbon, energy, and cost savings across the Council’s estate to help toward achieving their carbon zero goal by 2038. MCC is leading in the public sector in their commitment to ensure their community plays its part in meeting climate change commitments. In order to meet Greater Manchester’s target of zero-carbon by 2038, substantial reductions in energy consumption and renewables generation are needed across the council’s estate.

Upgrades to energy infrastructure across Manchester City Council provide a significant reduction in carbon emissions and annual energy costs for the community, all while achieving optimal use of Council funding. Pairing renewable on-site generation, energy infrastructure modernization, and ECMs extend the life and optimized operation of existing equipment to increase site resilience and improve comfort levels for building occupants.
- Environmental: Reducing environmental footprint by 1,416 tonnes of CO2 emissions reduction per annum. Supporting the drive toward net zero carbon by 2038.
- Donations in Kind: Complimentary supply and install of Solar PV systems on community buildings and SOLiC 200 devices in homes with existing Solar PV installations.
- Community Engagement: Donations of pre-paid fuel cards to help address fuel poverty, and to Manchester Food Bank.
Through detailed investment grade audits (IGA), Ameresco delivered a comprehensive suite of energy conservation measures (ECMs) paired with on-site renewable generation (consisting of combined heat & power and solar PV) across Manchester City Council. The IGAs identified significant energy efficiency opportunities across eleven sites, including the central library, leisure centres, sports and fitness centres, and other public council facilities. The solutions implemented for Manchester include:

- Building Management System (BMS) optimisation
- Boiler upgrade and optimisation
- Variable Speed Drive (VSD) Optimisation
- 2.6 MW Roof Mounted Solar PV
- Upgrades to aging energy infrastructure including transformer and heating controls
- 125 kW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit
- Enhancements to pipework and insulation
