Summary
In partnership with Republic Services, Ameresco developed, operates, and owns the Keller Canyon Landfill Gas-to-Energy (LFGTE) to Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) plant in CA – the first RNG plant in the U.S. powered by a LFGTE plant on the same landfill. By providing the San Francisco East Bay Area with clean energy resources, the Keller Canyon RNG facility will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance Republic Services’ longstanding sustainability goal to beneficially reuse 50% more of their biogas by 2030.
“Republic Services is investing in sustainability innovation to provide decarbonization solutions, and the Keller Canyon RNG project with Ameresco is a prime example. Together, we’re creating clean energy for California and helping create a more sustainable world.”

Customer Benefits
In addition to providing a clean energy and renewable resource, the Keller Canyon landfill gas to RNG plant is designed to provide the following benefits:
- Annual carbon emissions reduction estimated at 62,000 metric tons
- Reduce direct and avoided emissions equivalent to removing 30,000 cars from the road
- Support California’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy portfolio
- Decrease reliance on fossil fuels, promoting environmental sustainability
- Created over 80 jobs during construction and is expected to create over 25 jobs during operations
Solution
As the thirteenth renewable energy project with Republic Services, Ameresco was the partner chosen to develop the landfill gas to RNG facility by converting biogas into a low-carbon fuel source. The facility, scheduled to achieve commercial operation in July 2024, is currently being commissioned and is designed to process 4,500 standard cubic feet per minute of raw landfill gas.
