For nearly 20 years, Ameresco has partnered with Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL) to ensure mission continuity and energy resiliency through infrastructure upgrades, renewable resources and the integration of an innovative microgrid. The multi-phased project delivers significant solar power generation, BESS, advanced energy efficiency measures, backup power as well as ongoing O&M services. Utilizing an ESPC model, the project also supports the Federal Climate Smart Building Initiative.

The enduring partnership with JBMDL was designed to deliver numerous benefits for the base including improved energy resilience, reduced operational costs, and advancing key sustainability goals. These benefits include:
- Phase 3 designed to generate over $4.7 million in annual energy savings, a total energy usage reduction of 22%
- Enhanced energy security with uninterrupted power supply

Solution
Across three phases of work, Ameresco has been contracted to deliver over $250 million in project investment for JBMDL. The comprehensive energy solutions provided include energy infrastructure upgrades and the integration of on-site renewable generation, energy storage and microgrid technologies to allow for seamless transition to backup power in order to maintain operation of critical loads. Electric production generated at JBMDL creates solar renewable energy certificates (REC) that can be registered with New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program and sold to generate additional revenue that could be applied to the project. An estimated ~$60M in annuity-based RECs over the contract period help to offset the upfront project cost. The multi-phase, cumulative project scope includes:
- ~31.5 MW of ground mount and rooftop solar
- 2 MW / 4 MWh battery energy storage system
- 4 MW generators
- Microgrid controls system
- 90,000+ LED fixtures
- Advanced interior lighting controls and wireless streetlighting controls
- HVAC upgrades
Ameresco’s project work is paired with long-term O&M service contracts, a total of ~$65M in services. O&M services began in 2012 with an 18-year contract for core infrastructure across 130+ buildings, and now include 22-year terms for managing performance of the solar, BESS, microgrid, and generation resources installed in subsequent phases. Ameresco’s O&M team uses the AssetPlanner® computer maintenance management system (CMMS) to monitor, manage, and report on performance.
