Local Nursing Facility Invests in Energy Saving Program

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (April 23, 2002) — The Sancta Maria Nursing Facility recently invested in energy efficiency measures expected to save the facility thousands of dollars in energy costs annually. The efficiency program will also reduce overall maintenance and operating costs.

With the steady increase in energy costs in recent years, Sancta Maria managers undertook a comprehensive review of the facility’s operating costs. That review resulted in Sancta Maria signing an agreement with Ameresco, Inc., one of the nation’s leading energy services companies, to perform an energy analysis and recommend energy efficiency measures.

“Sancta Maria’s number one goal is providing the best care possible for our residents and guests,” said Paul Graffeo, Director of Plant Services at Sancta Maria. “Every dollar saved through this energy efficiency program – up to $10,000 annually – better enables us to focus on and achieve this goal.”

The first project primarily focused on upgrades to the Convent, including installation of a direct digital heating control system, new high efficiency terminal air conditioning units, and hot water distribution piping modifications. The second project, currently in construction, consists of converting an air-handling unit to more efficient chilled water, and the installation of a ductless A/C unit. Installing a dedicated A/C unit for a continuously staffed office in the facility will allow shut down of the central chiller plant at night and on weekends to save additional energy. The entire project is slated for completion by the end of April.

The goals of Ameresco’s first job were to replace old air conditioning equipment, increase energy efficiency, and solve a heating distribution problem. Phase Two objectives included replacing an aging air-cooled condensing unit with a more efficient cooling source, and increasing the load factor on the building’s central chilled water system.

“At Ameresco we believe in building partnerships with customers. We translate a thorough understanding of their energy needs and current consumption into strategies that reduce waste and maximize savings,” said Ameresco president and CEO George Sakellaris. “Our work with Sancta Maria demonstrates our flexible approach to projects that allows us to bridge gaps between a customer’s energy requirements and the innovative solutions that are customized to meet their needs.”
