DCAMM Commissioner Carol Gladstone, Ameresco Executive Vice President David J. Anderson join Roxbury Community College to celebrate completion of renewable energy project

(Roxbury, MA) – Roxbury Community College (RCC) will host a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony will mark the completion of the DCAMM-funded renewable energy project at RCC. Confirmed speakers for the event include DCAMM Commissioner Carol Gladstone, Department of Energy Resources Commissioner Judith Judson, and Ameresco Executive Vice President David J. Anderson.

“This is an incredibly impressive renewable energy project, which, in addition to the other extensive renovation projects across campus, will improve the student experience at RCC and serve the campus community for years to come,” said Carol Gladstone, DCAMM Commissioner.

The $20.1 million Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) with Ameresco is a part of the $72.5 million in ongoing renovations to the campus. The College community is excited about the speed at which Ameresco completed the innovative renewable energy project, and eagerly anticipates the completion of the energy efficiency project by year-end 2017.

“I’m so pleased that this renewable energy project commenced in August 2016 and is already complete, with minimal disruption to the campus community,” says Dr. Valerie Roberson, president of Roxbury Community College.  “This renewable solution provides tremendous strides in supporting and helping to achieve our sustainability goals.  I look forward to formally celebrating the completion of this project with the Greater Roxbury Community.”

The tri-level renewable energy solution for parking lot #1 is the most unique aspect of the ESPC project.  It includes 115 geothermal wells, 500-feet deep beneath parking lot #1, to function as a heating and cooling source.  On the surface, there is parking for 320 cars, in addition to electric charging stations for up to 6 cars. Above the lot, there is a solar canopy with approximately 3,000 solar panels representing nearly a megawatt of power.  In addition, there is efficient LED lighting under the PV canopy deck to help increase security for students. The overall ESPC project, which encompasses a total of 23 energy conservation measures, is expected to save RCC about $860,000 annually.

“Ameresco is honored to work with Roxbury Community College and we are excited to join in the celebration for the completion of the College’s renewable energy project,” said David J. Anderson, Executive Vice President, Ameresco. “This project demonstrates tremendous leadership, and commitment to the value that Roxbury Community College and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts place on efficiency, renewable resources and environmental stewardship. It is a great example of how the combination of energy efficiency measures and renewable sources of energy can provide a winning sustainable solution for the urban campus and the entire community.”

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m., beneath the solar canopy in parking lot #1.  The ceremony will be followed by a brief reception in the same location.  For additional information, visit www.rcc.mass.edu or call 617-933-7491.
