Ameresco Addresses Clean Air Act Roundtable Hosted by U.S. Senator Carper

Clean Air Act can spur innovation while delivering economic and environmental benefits to local communities

FRAMINGHAM, MA and WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2017 – Ameresco, Inc., (NYSE:AMRC), a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company, today announced that Senior Vice President Michael T. Bakas participated in a Clean Air Roundtable hosted by U.S. Senator Tom Carper at the U.S. Capitol this afternoon.  The session titled “A Historic View of the Clean Air Act: Providing the Way for Cleaner Air, Innovation, and Economic Opportunities” was created to facilitate discussions about the innovation and economic opportunities created by past Clean Air Act regulations and protections. Some Members of Congress attended and had the opportunity to ask questions. The event was open to the press and public.

Mr. Bakas, one of five expert witnesses from the clean technology and pollution control business community invited to speak, addressed how Ameresco works with the public and private sectors to implement economic and environmentally compelling energy projects that improve infrastructure, reduce emissions, reduce operating costs and revitalize the near and long-term sustainability of building and facility assets.

“Since Ameresco’s inception in 2000, Ameresco has designed, engineered, and constructed more than $5 billion in energy-based efficiency and infrastructure projects in the United States for Federal, state and local governments, institutional, educational, and commercial and industrial customers,” said Mr. Bakas. “In my 17 years with Ameresco, I have been directly responsible for developing energy projects that have been driven primarily by the air pollution policies promulgated under the Clean Air Act. These projects, most of which have been implemented through public-private partnerships, are comprehensive, advanced energy assets that use biogas generated from landfills, which is a natural byproduct of the decomposition of organic material, or from anaerobic digesters at wastewater treatment facilities.”

Mr. Bakas added that “In total, the legal foundation provided under the Clean Air Act has allowed Ameresco to develop renewable biogas facilities that represent:
•    Over $525 million in capital investment in local communities;
•    Nearly 2,000 jobs created as estimated using the Environmental and Energy Study Institute guidelines published by the EPA;
•    Nearly a million tons of CO2 emissions removed from the environment each year which is equivalent to the CO2 emissions from the consumption of over 21 million barrels of oil each year;
•    Millions in energy cost savings to public and private stakeholders; and,
•    Millions in revenue generation for municipalities – all through public-private partnerships that did not require any investment by Federal, state or local government.”

Bakas concluded by saying, “Ameresco has seen first-hand how the Clean Air Act has been the backbone for the deployment of advanced energy solutions that have created new opportunities to support highly-skilled jobs, while also investing in local infrastructure, transportation and manufacturing for both the public and private sector. As a company, Ameresco believes the Clean Air Act can spur innovation while delivering economic and environmental benefits to local communities.”

Clean Air Act protections have helped save Americans billions of dollars in public health costs, while providing a multitude of opportunities for good-paying American jobs.  These are American jobs in engineering and design, manufacturing, construction and operation in pollution control and clean energy technology made in America and sold all over the world.
