Summary
Boardman Local School District, in Boardman Township, has partnered with Ameresco since 2021 to address critical facility needs across the District. Over four phases of work, upgrades to multiple school buildings included LED lighting, HVAC, and building automation controls. These improvements created an optimized learning environment, generated significant energy savings, and increased operational efficiency. Ameresco also helped the District secure a $125,000 lighting retrofits grant for the project.
“From the start, Ameresco was committed to helping our district over the long- term, recommending and guiding us through the complete process of making the improvements over time. A lack of air conditioning was a big driver for the community. Due to Ameresco’s thorough engineering audit process, they were able to sequence improvements in a cost-effective way that prioritized the District’s needs. The result has been a vastly improved learning environment along with utility savings.”

Customer Benefits
The energy infrastructure upgrades are designed to deliver significant impact, including estimated annual energy savings of approximately 416,648 kWh and a reduction of ~280 metric tons of carbon emissions over the system’s lifespan. In addition to energy savings, the project also provides the following benefits:
- Lighting upgrades and air conditioning systems create a more comfortable learning environment
- New district-wide, non-proprietary building controls systems allow ease of access for maintenance personnel, better comfort control for staff and students, and optimized energy usage
- Ameresco’s partnership enabled the District to prioritize the needs of their facilities and apply for grant funding to help implement energy and cost saving solutions
Solution
Boardman Local School District faced significant infrastructure challenges—most notably, the lack of air conditioning in several facilities. Beginning with an ASHRAE Level 2 facility assessment, Ameresco developed a strategic plan to implement energy-efficient upgrades while maximizing the District’s capital budget and helped secure external funding to support the improvements. The multi- phased project included the following solutions:
- Implementing cooling to three elementary schools, the middle school, and the intermediate school cafeteria
- Boiler and chiller replacements
- Interior and exterior LED lighting
- Building automation controls, unifying interface
