Smart Cities World – Portland streetlight conversion project reaches completion

LED streetlights across the US city’s greater area are dark-sky friendly with a colour temperature of 3,000-4,000 Kelvin and claim to use 50 per cent less energy than traditional highway and tunnel lighting fixtures.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced the completion of a streetlight conversion pilot programme which saw more than 8,000 streetlights across the greater Portland area replaced with energy-efficient LEDs.

In partnership with cleantech integrator Ameresco, the $18.6m conversion project was funded by an energy savings performance contract (ESPC). Additionally, Ameresco also upgraded lighting in 13 tunnels within ODOT Region 1.
