Energy Storage News – California: SDG&E commissions 171MW of BESS, Ameresco enlisted for 379MWh of projects

California utility San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has commissioned two projects totalling 171MW of battery storage, while system integrator Ameresco has secured contracts to deliver 379MWh at four gas plants in the state.

SDG&E announced the commissioning of the 131MW Westside Canal project and the 40MW Fallbrook project, located in Imperial Valley and San Diego county respectively. Westside came online last month while Fallbrook has been operational since May, having begun testing in late 2022.

Although the two projects’ energy storage capacity in MWh was not revealed, large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the state tend to be four-hour systems, especially those delivered by or for California’s three investor-owned utilities: SDG&E, PG&E and SCE.
