Bloomberg Law – US Rolls Out Federal Building Retrofit Plan, Eyes Work Ahead

The government’s central purchaser is starting to put the $3.4 billion it received under the climate law to use, announcing on Wednesday a series of building efficiency projects across its portfolio.

Included in the General Services Administration’s new spending is $43.5 million for building infrastructure upgrades and new technology installations at four federal buildings in the Dallas area and six in Louisiana aimed at reducing energy consumption.

Under a contract awarded to Ameresco, Inc., two of the buildings will undergo significant retrofits that will cut emissions at least 40% using technologies such as magnetic levitation chillers, building automation improvements, and high-efficiency transformers.

Not all of the $43.5 million contract comes from climate law funding. The projects are also being supported by private sector money for energy performance contracts, GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan said in an interview.
