Ameresco and GSA Join to Recognize Deep Energy Retrofit Project

FRAMINGHAM, MA and WASHINGTON, DC – June 11, 2014 – Ameresco, Inc., (NYSE:AMRC), a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company, today participated in a ceremonial event with senior officials from the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the White House Council on Environmental Quality to recognize the deep energy retrofit project Ameresco is currently constructing for the GSA in the National Capital Region. The $45 million comprehensive Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) serves two federal buildings just outside of Washington, D.C. and was awarded through the GSA’s National Deep Energy Retrofit Challenge.

“Today, we celebrate a proving ground for innovation—a comprehensive energy savings project—that is going further, farther, and deeper to achieve 60 percent energy savings,” said George P. Sakellaris, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ameresco. “Ameresco is proud to be implementing this innovative deep energy retrofit project, and we applaud the GSA for its stewardship in pursuing energy efficiency and renewable energy across its buildings nationwide.”

GSA Administrator Dan Tangherlini joined Ameresco CEO George Sakellaris, U.S. DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency Kathleen Hogan, Agency-Wide Shared Services Chief for the IRS Stuart Burns, and Federal Environmental Executive Kate Brandt at the New Carrollton Federal Building (NCFB)—also known as the IRS New Carrollton Financial Service Center in Lanham, Maryland, to recognize the Obama Administration’s commitment to energy efficiency upgrades at federal buildings and the innovative energy efficiency and renewable energy project underway.

“We are committed to doing our part to green the federal government by ensuring that the buildings in our real estate portfolio meet the Obama administration’s green goals,” said Dan Tangherlini, Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration. “Energy Savings Performance Contracts give us the opportunity to work with industry partners to strengthen these efforts.”

Since March, Ameresco has been constructing the energy savings project which includes significant improvements to the building control and HVAC systems, and the installation of more than 11,000 individually addressable LED lighting fixtures and a network of 2,000 new sensors. Once completed the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20,000 metric tons annually.

This summer, Ameresco will begin construction on a geothermal well field at the NCFB in its north parking lot as part of the approximately one megawatt of on-site renewable energy to be installed under the ESPC, which also includes an 808kW custom-designed solar canopy to cover all unshaded areas of the parking lot. Ameresco will install a 67kW carport structure in the south parking lot facing the New Carrollton Metro Stop. A new solar thermal heating system will be installed on the roof of the building.

In 2012, the GSA competitively challenged energy service companies (ESCOs) to innovatively improve the energy performance of 30 GSA-owned buildings through ESPCs aimed for maximum energy savings. The GSA selected Ameresco to develop a comprehensive ESPC addressing over one million square feet of office space at the New Carrollton Federal Building in Lanham, Maryland and the Silver Spring Metro Center 1 building in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The deep energy retrofit ESPC supports the GSA in meeting its commitment towards the President’s Better Buildings Challenge, which since 2011 has directed federal agencies to leverage $4 billion of performance-based contracts for energy savings by 2016.
