Town Officials and Ameresco Joined on Saturday to View the ‘Lifting of the Solar Panels’ to the Roof of Arlington’s Dallin Elementary School

Solar power purchase agreement to help reduce electricity rate resulting in annual utility budget savings for Arlington.

FRAMINGHAM, MA and ARLINGTON, MA – August 17, 2015 – Ameresco, Inc., (NYSE: AMRC), a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company, joined with town and school officials for a briefing and photo opportunity hosted by Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine at the Dallin Elementary School during which he highlighted the Town’s progress with its ongoing roof-top solar initiatives.

“It’s exciting to see the solar initiatives at our schools coming to reality,” said Adam Chapdelaine, Town Manager, Arlington. “As a designated Green Community, Arlington is making tremendous strides towards achieving our sustainability commitments.”

Kathleen Bodie, Arlington School Superintendent added, “Generating solar power at the schools creates a learning opportunity for the students. Our future leaders can benefit from a teaching curriculum based on real-life examples with this renewable energy system.”

The Town of Arlington entered into a 20-year solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with the developer, Ameresco, where the Town will purchase electricity at a rate lower than it currently pays to Eversource resulting in annual utility budget savings.  Rooftop-mounted solar panels are being installed at six Arlington schools, and once the systems have been completed, they’re expected to generate 850,000 kWh in the first year of system operation; 16 million kWh over 20 years.

“Ameresco commends the Town of Arlington for its leadership in embracing a renewable energy solution for its schools,” said Jim Walker, Vice President, Solar, Ameresco. “The solar generation provides an excellent opportunity for students to experience first-hand, clean energy and sustainable practices as part of their overall education.”

Arlington’s renewable generation will help reduce its carbon dioxide emissions from New England fossil fuel-fired electric generation plants by approximately 586 metric tons annually, the equivalent to removing 123 cars from the road or powering 54 houses.  Over 20 years, the six systems will help prevent the emissions of 11,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide; the same as eliminating over 2,300 cars off the road.

The project is expected to be operational in the fall of 2015. Once complete, the total installed capacity of the six solar systems will be nearly 720 kW.

About the Town of Arlington
Arlington, founded over 350 years ago, remains proud of its history, even as it has grown into a thoroughly modern community. The birthplace of Uncle Sam, the location of the first public children’s library, and the site of most of the fighting when the British marched through it returning from the Old North Bridge at the start of the Revolutionary War, Arlington has preserved many of its historical buildings and even recreated its town common. Once a thriving agriculture and mill town, Arlington’s excellent access to metropolitan Boston has made it a very desirable place to live. In 2010, the Town of Arlington was designated a Green Community, and recently was awarded its fourth grant. For more information, visit http://www.arlingtonma.gov.
