Renewables Now – Atura, Ameresco Awarded 250-MW BESS Project in Canada
Canadian combined-cycle gas plants operator Atura Power, a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation, has been selected to build a 250-MW/1,000-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in east-central Canada in partnership with US renewables company Ameresco Inc (NYSE:AMRC).
Napanee BESS Inc, a joint venture of the two partners, has won the right to sign a 20-year capacity deal with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The contract is one of seven BESS awards totalling 739 MW in a recent capacity procurement by IESO.
The BESS facility in east Greater Napanee, southeastern Ontario, will be built adjacent to Atura’s Napanee Generating Station and Ontario Power Generation’s Lennox Generating Station. The project has a total budget of about CAD 725 million (USD 542.7m/EUR 505.5m), Brad Kyte, senior manager of business development at Atura, told Canada’s Global News. He added that the company has just launched the environmental approval process for the project.
