Renewables Now – Ameresco awarded 40-MW biofuel-powered project in Hawaii

US renewables company Ameresco Inc (NYSE:AMRC) on Wednesday said it has been awarded a 40-MW biofuel-powered renewable energy project by Hawaiian Electric Company.

The Ukiu Energy project, located in Maui, is part of Hawaiian Electric Company’s latest phase of clean energy procurements. The utility announced Ameresco’s selection earlier this month. The developer will build, own and operate the facility. Once the parties finalise the Ukiu Energy contract, it will be submitted for approval to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

The project includes a biofuel-powered generator with six dual-fuel engines. It will provide firm renewable energy and flexible capacity, supporting the additional integration of intermittent renewable resources. The facility will help advance Hawaii’s goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality by 2045.
