Hawai’i Public Radio – Pearl Harbor military housing to undergo energy conservation project
Military housing at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Air Force Base will undergo a $102 million dollar energy conservation project that will reduce electricity consumption by 30% over 25 years.
Clean technology company Ameresco has partnered on the project with Lend Lease, the owner and manager of Hickam Communities. The project includes a 25-year operations and management agreement.
The project will not be funded by additional congressional appropriations. In a statement, Ameresco said, “The project is funded solely through energy and operational savings. The project is expected to generate $13 million in annual cost savings that would be used to pay for the improvements, financing costs, and operations and maintenance services over the 25-year performance period.”
Existing heating and air conditioning systems, water systems and lighting in the community will be replaced or retrofitted with more energy efficient ones.
