SUMMARY:APPA 2020 Virtual Facilities Summit
DESCRIPTION:Re-Energizing Campuses with Renewables\nWednesday\, August 5th | 1:45 PM – 2:45 PM ET \nSpeakers:\nMaria Cimilluca\, VP Facilities Management\, Northeastern University\nRick Terhune\, Business Manager\, Medical University of South Carolina\nModerator: Rhea Hickok\, Ameresco \nAbstract: Campus-wide energy projects can at first seem complex and costly\, but as this session will illustrate\, they don’t have to be. Speakers from Northeastern University and Medical University of South Carolina will describe the energy conservation measures they have implemented and showcase the on-site sources of renewable energy they have created\, that have stabilized operational costs\, optimized energy resiliency\, and advanced the overall sustainability goals of their organizations.

SUMMARY:Energy Storage in Microgrid Development
DESCRIPTION:Microgrids consist of distributed energy resources connected to the distribution system for normal operation\, but which can also operate as an “island” system apart from the rest of the power grid to provide localized power during a widescale outage. Microgrids have been gaining attention lately for their role in reinforcing reliability and resilience\, with Department of Defense (DoD) military bases among the leading adopters. \nThe earliest microgrids typically used diesel backup generation to power critical loads during an outage. As both PV solar and energy storage became less expensive and more widely deployed\, solar and storage became integrated into a diversifying set of microgrid resources. Newer microgrids provide clean energy for normal operation and steady power in the event of grid outages. Wood Mackenzie recently projected that energy storage combined with solar\, wind or hydro will power 35 percent of microgrid capacity installed in 2025\, up from 14 percent in 2019. \nThis webinar explores the increasing role of energy storage in microgrid design and operation. Two presentations will focus on incorporating storage into microgrids at DoD installations and the final panelist will present a recent analysis of the resilience implications of storage paired with solar PV. \nSpeakers:\nJim Bishop\, Director – Advanced Technology Solutions\, Ameresco\nLakshmi Srinivasan\, Senior Systems Engineer\, Lockheed Martin\nRyan Hledik\, Principal\, The Brattle Group

SUMMARY:Energy Exchange 2020
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to energy and water management\, efficient-resilient-secure operations are the goal of every federal agency and the mission of the 2020 Energy Exchange. \nIn 2020\, the Energy Exchange is going virtual\, bringing efficient-resilient-secure energy and water management solutions directly to wherever YOU are August 10-14. This year’s Energy Exchange will be a virtual event from August 10-14. It will include onsite demonstrations of cutting edge technologies\, FEDS Spotlight recognition of the most innovative and successful projects\, and opportunities to drive innovation with the help of DOE and FEMP subject matter experts. \nIt’s all about empowering solutions\, mitigating outages\, reducing cost and waste\, and supporting the missions of all our federal agencies. \nModerator: Michelle Wheeler\, Business Development Manager\nTrack: Integrating Resilience at Federal Agencies\nSession: B:5 – Defining Requirements to Maximize Resilience\nDate: August 11th  |  3:00 pm\nOverview: This session looks to answer the question of how much water and power is really needed to be efficient and support critical missions. Available tools and resources and processes will be explored to look at criticality\, efficiency\, threat assessments and load prioritization\, along with the challenges of turning those analyses into a roadmap for addressing gaps to improve efficiency and resilience posture. \nSpeaker: Benjamin Lavoie\, Lead Engineer – Energy Storage\nTrack: Deploying Efficient Technologies in Federal Projects\nSession: E:7 – Advanced Energy Storage Technologies & Applications\nDate: August 12th | 10:30 am\nOverview: Advanced energy storage technologies and applications are shaping the Federal landscape and hold unlimited potential for improving resilience throughout the Federal government. This session will highlight emergent energy storage approaches\, including thermal and electricity storage. Speakers will describe the Department of Energy’s Grand Storage Challenge and provide case studies of ongoing storage projects. \nSpeaker: Matt Gagnon\, Project Engineer\nTrack: Integrating Resilience at Federal Agencies\nSession: B:13 – Empowering Stakeholders Across the Nexus\nDate: August 13th  | 3:00 pm\nOverview: The resilience nexus is a dynamic and continuous process. For the resilience process to be successful\, engaging a diverse set of stakeholders across a range of perspectives and expertise is critical. This session will focus on achieving leadership buy-in and convening stakeholders to integrate requirements and technologies to achieve efficiencies and enhance resiliency.
