UNLV: Thomas & Mack Arena and Cox Pavilion
The Challenge
The Thomas and Mack Arena hosts over 200 events per year, from high school graduations, rock concerts, hockey games, ice shows, rodeos, basketball tournaments, and seminars. The building had an old, inefficient chiller that used a refrigerant no longer in production, making operation difficult and expensive. At the time of this project Thomas and Mack was undergoing a significant expansion with the addition of the Cox Pavilion field house. The project was over budget, fast track, and the project was threatened.
Our Solution
Ameresco provided part of the solution to the project’s issues by replacing and upgrading an existing chiller, providing a new chiller and providing both chilled and hot water piping from Thomas and Mack to the Cox Pavilion to provide heating and cooling. Plate and frame heat exchangers were provided to take advantage of the cool dry conditions to provide tower free cooling for the bulk of the year. The existing control system was expanded to accommodate the new equipment, and the project provided increased comfort for the office areas and the new Cox Pavilion.
Impact
Successfully competed in 2001, the Arena and the Pavilion are now hosting premiere events for Southern Nevada.
