Chicago Housing Authority
The Challenge
Deferred maintenance and budget cuts were severely impacting the Chicago Housing Authority’s (CHA) operating budget. Outdated central steam plant equipment and leaking infrastructure were literally sending steam out of the sidewalks!
Our Solution
Under a performance contract, the CHA was able to decentralize all of its elderly sites to high efficiency site-based gas equipment, resulting in an off-loading of its central steam plants and distribution systems.
Impact
With all 3 phases of the energy performance contract, the CHA is saving over $3 million annually in energy and water costs. Additionally, the CHA is achieving maintenance and operating savings as a result of decentralizing the steam heat and hot water.
Testimonial:
“The CHA has the largest public housing energy performance contract in the country ($30 million). With this contract, we will save over $36 million during the contract term, and will address all of our senior building portfolio with lighting, water, and appliance measures (9,000 units), as well as decentralize from steam heat and hot water at 3 large sites.” Dave Anderson, Director.
